Venice civic theater investigation

A civic theater investigation at Palasport, where a connected city meets the controlled edge of the Arsenale.

Ongoing · architectural design beginning

Date / period
Fall 2026
Place
Venice, Italy
Contribution
Adam Scott, mapping and site tests within the Notre Dame Design VII studio group.

The Venice studio investigation is now focused on the Palasport site beside Campo della Tana and the Arsenale. Site testing is complete and architectural design is beginning. The earlier four-site comparisons form the background to this direction.

The project asks how a civic theater, spoken-word room and costume-making space could create an independent public place at the edge of a controlled precinct. The site is well connected to the city but has limited local permeability; no unverified gate, tunnel or through-route is treated as public access.

Adam contributed mapping and site tests within a studio group. Building form, acoustics and passive-ventilation performance remain design questions. The current record does not establish an approved or built scheme.

A connected city, a controlled edge

The two map scales distinguish arrival through the city from passage within the ticketed precinct. The drawing does not establish a new gate, tunnel or public through-route.
